Here's a link to a blog post about the Astor Place can-you-guess-the-gender-of-the-chef-in-a-blind-taste-test challenge. I chose this blog to post, rather than a more straight-ahead description from Saveur or another foodie site, because I think this author does a great job of debunking some of the stereotypes behind this test. She also quotes from another blog that does similar things, quite nicely. At any rate, it's an interesting read.
One thing that I find troubling is that this story is what comes up over and over again when you try to search for stories on gender imbalance in the food industry. That may be due to some idiosyncrasy in the search terms I used, but it strikes me that people are more interested in the question of nature vs. nurture than they are in the nuts-and-bolts of who gets jobs and how much they get paid.
