Food Deserts in U.S.? Food and Equity

In United States, a land of opportunities and abundance, "food deserts" unfortunately exist. Food deserts refer to the issue that sources of healthy and affordable food are unaccessible to many American households. In Food Deserts in the U.S., there is a map showing the realities of food deserts in different regions.

This post from Sociological Images makes me wonder over and over why food sources like Stop and Shop, Whole Foods, McDonalds, etc exist in the places they do. Too often we blame individuals for their health problems and do not see that society and corporations help shape the choices. Who has access to organic food? Why is fast food corporations so prominent in low - income neighborhoods?
